How do I get access to the Lineberger Bioinformatics Compute Resources?

If you are a new Lineberger faculty member, please contact informaticshelp@unc.edu with your ONYEN and the ONYEN of the members of your lab.  Once your account is set up, we will email you instructions on how to access the services.

If you are joining the lab of a Lineberger investigator and need access to their resources, please email informaticshelp@unc.edu with your ONYEN and make sure to cc your PI on the email.

What compute resources are available through the Lineberger Bioinformatics Core?

The University Cancer Research Fund (UCRF) has helped in building the common large scale computing cluster that includes 90+ physical servers, 5100+ CPUs, 23+ TB of RAM, and 4.5+ PB of storage on a NetApp enterprise storage system.

Lineberger investigators receive access to this resource for their computing needs and can access it via the command line, or one of our web interfaces:

  • OnDemand: Web-based portal for LBC cluster resources, offering access to files, job submission, documentation, shell access, and interactive apps like RStudio, JupyterHub, and VSCode.
  • jUNCtion: a workflow management application that runs standard bioinformatics workflows via a web interface.
How are data analysis resources allocated?

We are always available for a consultation to discuss your project and possible paths forward!

Each request will be subject to a triaging procedure. Projects that financially support a member of the core will be given top priority followed by providing pre-award support for grant submissions. Additional bandwidth will be used to assist with projects on a case-by-case basis to give investigators as much assistance as possible, particularly new and/or junior researchers who may not have well established funding sources.

All decisions concerning the allocation of analysts effort will be made by core leadership.

How do I acknowledge the Lineberger Bioinformatics Core?

The use of this resource should be acknowledged in all publications. Please use this template:

What are your co-authorship guidelines?

Core personnel should be given co-authorship if they have made a significant intellectual and/or organizational contribution to the work described – such as the conceptualization, design, analysis and interpretation of data and/or input into drafting, revising or writing any portion of the manuscript. Please provide core personnel at least 1 week to review the publication.

Do you have a resource document for grant writing?

Yes, please see the details on our wiki.

Can you provide bioinformatics oversight to trainees in my lab?

Yes, but in select cases. Please reach out to us and set up a consulting arrangement to discuss.
