The LINEBERGER BIOINFORMATICS CORE (LBC) Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is a specimen tracking system designed specifically to meet the immediate, inventory-style tracking needs of multiple health research projects. It provides centralized sample tracking for multiple core facilities at the Cancer Center and other parts of UNC including the School of Public Health.
LIMS Supports
- UNC Biospecimen Processing Facility (BSP) http://bsp.web.unc.edu
- Tissue Procurement Facility (TPF) https://unclineberger.org/tissue-procurement
- Translational Genomics Lab (TGL) https://unclineberger.org/tgl/
- Merker Lab https://unclineberger.org/merkerlab/
- Office of Genomics Research (OGR) https://unclineberger.org/ogr/
Through LIMS, labs are able to manage freezer inventory, process samples through project specific or generic workflows, seamlessly transfer samples from one core facility to another, print labels, track samples that are dropped-off, and view an audit history of everything that happened to a particular sample. The LIMS is integrated with other applications such as Tableau for report generation. Integration with the Central Patient Registry (CPR) in the Tissue Procurement LIMS allows Lineberger researchers to connect patients with samples. LIMS supports sample results file tracking, which allows researchers to link next generation sequencing samples with the generated fastq files. Integration with jUNCtion provides researchers the ability to find fastq files for given samples and use the files for downstream analysis.
LIMS tracks over 3 million samples spanning back to 2005.
